โจ What is Optical Isomerism?
Optical isomerism is a type of stereoisomerism in which molecules exist as non-superimposable mirror images of each other. These molecules are called enantiomers.
๐ฌ Key Concepts to Understand:
โ
Chirality: A molecule is chiral when its mirror image cannot be superimposed on it.
โ
Chiral Carbon: A carbon atom attached to four different atoms or groups is generally a chiral centre.
โ
Enantiomers: A pair of non-superimposable mirror-image molecules.
โ
Optical Activity: Chiral substances can rotate plane-polarized light. Enantiomers rotate it by equal amounts in opposite directions under the same conditions.
